DIRECTOR OF HEALTH & WELLNESS

The Health & Wellness Director oversees YMCA programs, staff, and leading health initiatives, and engaging members in healthy living.
Job Description

The Director oversees the quality of the Health & Wellness Center. Inspecting functionality and cleanliness of equipment as well as tracking maintenance. Follows health & wellness trends, purchases equipment and supplies, and will innovate and implement new group exercise classes and programs. The Director connects with members, supports those who struggle to maintain a healthy lifestyle. They will lead day to day operations, creating and implementing health and wellness coaching schedules, group exercise schedules, and doing biweekly payroll for staff. 

The director will update the Y application with up to date schedules and changes as needed. They will work with the marketing team to ensure that offerings are advertised to members.   

The director will assist with special YMCA events or projects such as the YMCA River Bank Run, grade school challenge, and the Annual Support Campaign. They will oversee seasonal special offerings such as the Iron Will Triathlon and other Health and Wellness initiatives. The Director must have a leadership style that is team-oriented and to continue to pursue further education and growth in exercise science, wellness, staff management and member service. Must also be able to thrive in an environment with the unique challenges of a non-profit, community service organization and have the flexibility to work in a constantly changing environment. Works with limited supervision.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

Required -  Bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university; or one or two years relate experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required – Certified group exercise instructor with experience plus education or experience in strength training, general fitness

Preferred – AFAA, ACE or other national accredited personal trainer/group ex-certification

Essential Functions

· Demonstrates well-defined administration skills in the areas of scheduling, communication, and personnel management, program planning, budgeting, conflict resolution, record-keeping and facility utilization and facility maintenance.

·Schedules, manages, monitors, supports, and maintains regular communication with all H&W staff including coaches, group exercise instructors, and personal trainers all while providing coverage or sub as needed. 

·Manages the YMCA mobile app and virtual offerings and works with marketing to ensure the schedule is online. 

·Manages related sound equipment such as microphones, Bluetooth, and other audio/tech accessories.

·Handles the daily supervision of H&W staff to ensure proper training, consistent coverage of programs and excellent member service.

·Works with staff, members and program participants.

· Annual audits of YMCA offerings such as member orientations, health and wellness rules and guidelines, and assists with YMCA healthy living initiatives such as Active 6. 

·Verifies and submits biweekly payroll for group exercise instructors, H&W coaches, personal and small group trainers, and volunteers as applicable.

·Manages hiring and onboarding of H&W staff with assistance from the COO.

·Maintains records of staff certifications.

·Conducts annual employee reviews with assistance from the COO.

· Works with the COO on developing the annual budget, as well as monthly reporting of and adherence to the department budget.

· Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of member participation in programs and specialty classes and compiles program statistics.

·Stays current on changes and trends in the fitness industry through continuing education to assist in the creation of new classes and increase participation in fitness classes and programs in accordance with strategic plans.

·Oversees and ensures the cleanliness, maintenance and safety of the H & W center and fitness facilities and equipment for the benefit of members, participants, staff & volunteers.

·Learns and uses participant names to build relationships and small communities and kindred groups.

·Assists COO in fundraising activities and special events in the department, specifically, the YMCA’s Riverbank Run, as well as in the larger organization, including the Annual Support Campaign.

·Completes required child sexual abuse prevention training and complies with legal and ethical obligations as a mandatory reporter of suspected child abuse and cooperates fully with any investigation of such abuse.

·Creates and maintains an SOP binder for backup/delegate use.

·Performs other duties as assigned. 

Required Certifications

Preferred – Instructor who teaches a variety of classes and formats

Preferred – Working knowledge of anatomy, kinesiology, and safe exercise technique
