Job Description
The Aquatics Director at the Downtown YMCA is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and management of all aquatic programs, ensuring a safe and high-quality experience for members and staff. This role includes supervising lifeguards, swim instructors, and other aquatic staff, maintaining pool safety and cleanliness, and developing engaging swim programs for various age groups. The director must also ensure compliance with all safety regulations, and foster a positive and inclusive aquatic environment.
Qualifications
Two years experience in aquatics, youth, and fitness programming or equivalent. Must possess or be willing to obtain the following certifications: American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard, ARC Lifeguard Instructor, and Certified Pool Operator. Must be 18 years of age or older.
Essential Functions
- Support the Mission, Vision, and Direction of the YMCA
- Organize, develop, schedule, and administer the daily operation of aquatics programming
- Ensure compliance with state regulations and Y-USA standards for aquatics
- Establish new activities and expand current aquatics programs within the community in accordance with YMCA standards
- Ensure a culture of safety. Lead practices and procedures in accordance with regulations, national safety and training standards, insurance, and Y-USA guidelines.
- Train, direct, schedule, and supervise lifeguards and swim instructors.
- Ensure staff certifications are current and complete and keep meticulous records
- Schedule and organize in-service training to ensure staff are certified and ready to respond in required areas
- Assist with hiring and performance management of lifeguards and swim instructors
- Assist as needed with YMCA operations, building coverage, meetings, and special events.
- Follow employee and volunteer screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.
- Provide employees and volunteers with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk.
- Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with children.
- Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
- Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures.
- Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
- Follow mandated reporting requirements.
Required Certifications
Must possess or be willing to obtain the following certifications: American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard, ARC Lifeguard Instructor, and Certified Pool Operator.
