Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for providing cause-driven coordination and operations to the Aquatics Department. This position is responsible for delivering and assisting in all aspects of aquatic operations including staffing and supervision, coordinating our lifeguard team, scheduling, training, on-deck supervision, providing guard coverage, and troubleshooting & monitoring daily pool mechanics, logs, and procedures that adhere to all state, local, and YMCA health & safety regulations. Scheduling flexibility is a must. The Aquatics Coordinator will seasonally align with operational needs; hours and days may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends. This position would rotate between our Red Bank YMCA and Camp Zehnder branch locations. 

Qualifications

·       Must be 21 years of age or older.

·       At least 3 years of Lifeguard experience.  

·       Leadership experience in the areas of staff supervision and development, program planning and initiative, and pool deck & pump room operations.

·       Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification, Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPO certification (or ability to acquire).

·       Ability to assist with the daily supervision of a diverse aquatic staff of lifeguards, swim instructors, and volunteers.  Some prior supervision of staff preferred.

·       Demonstrate sound decision-making abilities and possess mature judgement.

·       Must be observant, safety conscious, and able to respond calmly and quickly to safety and emergency situations.

·       Must demonstrate qualities of a leader and be able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.

·       Strong organizational and communication skills.

·       Must be able to work at both the Red Bank YMCA and YMCA Camp Zehnder locations, with reliable transportation to travel between locations as needed.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES: 

·       Must be mentally alert and physically capable of performing all duties required of a lifeguard. May act as a first responder for emergencies in any part of the building.

·       Always exhibit a professional attitude, which includes wearing proper staff attire, supporting and enforcing pool rules, YMCA policies and decisions and answering member questions about YMCA programs and services.

·       Must be able to communicate clearly with members and staff using Listen First skills.

·       Work with the Aquatics Director to hire, train, develop, and supervise all aquatics lifeguards & volunteers.

·       Responsible for providing department oversight and leadership in the absence of the Aquatics Director.

·       Ensure that all safety requirements are maintained in the pools, on the decks, and surrounding areas. Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations, and maintain accurate records of pool chemical levels and all aquatic facility/pool maintenance. Notify the Aquatics Director and/or Facility Director of any needs.

·       Ensure all lifeguards are always rescue ready. Complete quick checks oversight for each pool and shift. Responsible for conducting and recording routine live drills and in-service trainings. 

·       Create Lifeguard Schedules and manage lifeguard coverage to ensure program delivery and maximum usage of all pools.

·       Responsible for stocking and inventory of all first aid supplies and kits, as well as checking daily & weekly logs for AED/Oxygen supplies & testing.

·       Foster an environment that is positive, motivating, and engaging to all members and staff.

·       Provide breaks for lifeguards, assist in rotations and guard as needed. Position may include working regular lifeguard shifts.

·       Provides leadership and modeling of all enhanced cleaning of areas and equipment, assisting and supporting the efforts of the YGMC when it comes to health and wellness for the facility and other locations where the YGMC conducts business. Employees may be asked to assist in other areas of the facility when needed. All employees are expected to clean anything that is used after they use it, all employees are expected to wash their hands on a frequent basis (recommended every 30 minutes if possible), and use hand sanitizer when hand washing is not available. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

·       Ensure proper coverage of lifeguard shifts. 

·       Conducts aquatics orientations with all new employees and supervises their acclimation to policies and procedures.

·       Assists the Aquatics Director with evaluating staff performance and providing frequent feedback to staff.

·       Work with Aquatics Director in planning staff meetings and in-service trainings.
