Greater Green Bay YMCA Facts
As the nation's leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y offers more than just a job, it offers a cause to embrace. Serving over 46,887 members in the Brown County area, our Association includes four Centers, four camps and the area’s largest School Age Child Care program. Come make a difference with us at the Y!
History: (Brief) The Greater Green Bay YMCA was established in 1870 on the corner of Third and Chestnut streets. Originally a recreation center and reading room, the membership was comprised of 25 young men. Debates, prayer meetings and social events made up the programs in the early years. After disbanding in 1879, a new organization was formed in 1887 and was established as the Fort Howard YMCA on Walnut and Chestnut where members could enjoy the facilities for a nominal fee of $5 per year. Disaster struck in 1908 when the building burned to the ground.
In 1919 there was an organized effort to re-establish the YMCA in Green Bay. The diligence and vision of Mitchell Joannes helped to raise the largest amount ever, $425,000, by a city the size of Green Bay in YMCA history up to that point. “When this city had a population of 20,000 people, it had 140 saloons, besides several pool and billiard places, all doing a thriving business both day and night, every day of the week,” Joannes stated in explaining his interest in bringing back the YMCA to Green Bay. Joannes felt he could safely make a large contribution to the YMCA and be sure it would prove to be a blessing to all humanity in helping make Green Bay a better and cleaner place for all people. The new YMCA building was completed in September 1925 on the corner of Pine and Jefferson, the site of our current Ferguson Family YMCA.
Since 1870 the YMCA has evolved to meet the changing needs of the Green Bay community. Fitness, swimming, camping, special interest groups, leaders club, and more were developed to help people build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The Greater Green Bay YMCA has made a commitment for almost 150 years to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Area Amenities and Community Benefits
Attractions and quality of life benefits to living and working in the community: Did you know that Green Bay, Wisconsin is the smallest city in the United States to host a professional sports team? The Green Bay Packers are known around the world, and Lambeau Field is hallowed ground to most sports fans. Now that's unique. But it's the "greater" part of Green Bay that surprises most.
Local and national entertainment regularly takes the stage. Wineries grow their own grapes to produce wines right here. Artists find their inspiration throughout various areas, including along the banks of Green Bay. We have a botanical garden, a small amusement park, and a zoo. Walleye fishermen say we have some of the best water. Our walking and biking paths wind along the beautiful Fox River. And our museums take a little different approach to making history "come alive."
