Job Description

The State Director of Civic Engagement is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to grow civic engagement in the state of Indiana with a specific focus on the Youth and Government program. Primary responsibilities include: to coordinate, execute and promote civic engagement programs that comprise the Youth and Government portfolio. To work cooperatively with school districts, advisors and local YMCAs. To perform duties in a manner that provides safety and clarification of the Y’s core values. To partner with team members of the Alliance to further advocacy efforts.

Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree preferred in a related field but will accept experience equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a program management role and/or familiarity with Indiana government.
  • Strong program management skills with a proven track record of effectively driving process improvement, multitasking and a high attention to detail.
  • Must be a self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity, proactive in approach, and possess problem-solving and analytical skills to successfully manage issues that have no precedent.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills, with outstanding interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team as well as independently.
  • Proficient in Office 365 suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Highly motivated and innovative.
  • Ability to travel as work dictates, estimated to be 50-60% of work week.
  • Familiarity with the YMCA movement, culture, mission, and purpose.
  • A strong commitment to the mission of the YMCA and its core values.
  • The minimum physical requirements of this position include ability to remain in a stationary position 50%, move freely and lift 25-pound boxes or materials to load and unload equipment or materials, manage equipment, and work on computers and travel to events as required.
Essential Functions
  1. Develop and maintain strong recruiting ties across the state
    1. Proactively reach out to school districts and YMCAs to maintain or establish new delegations.
    2. Maintain consistent contact with advisors, teachers, and local YMCAs for effective program administration.
    3. Develop meaningful peer relationships with other YMCA professionals across the state.
    4. Lead the recruitment, training, support, and supervision of program volunteers.
  2. Implementation of a highly impactful INYaG program
    1. Recruit, train, and prepare young people to participate in INYaG.
    2. Develop and help implement new youth program opportunities that align with the mission of INYaG.
    3. Complete necessary administrative duties and logistical arrangements for INYaG programs and meetings.
    4. Facilitate and guide the teaching of the YMCA Core Values in all INYaG programs.
    5. Increase awareness, image, support, and prestige of the program.
    6. Grow the diversity of program offerings as enrollment growth dictates.
  3. Executes civic engagement programs, events, and meetings annually
    1. Attend, lead, or assist in providing on-site leadership and management of programs, events, and meetings.
    2. Includes, but not limited to delegation advisory training, INYaG organization days, Youth Leadership Training, and the Model Government Conference.
  4. Continuously develops, evaluates, and implements strategies to grow program
    1. Conduct annual evaluations of programs and initiatives and make improvements as needed. Measure the effectiveness of INYaG using quantitative and qualitative data.
    2. Provide technical assistance and resource materials to delegations and communities related to relevant content.
    3. Market and promote INYaG programs to schools and YMCAs throughout Indiana
  5. Coordinates work with team members of the Alliance
    1. Works as a valued member of the Alliance staff team.
    2. Takes a supportive role in advocacy efforts.
    3. Assists with the development and execution of the Alliance strategic plan.
  6. All other duties deemed necessary for the success of this position.
