Aquatics Director

The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas is looking for a leader who is passionate about water safety in our communities! 
Job Description

Under the supervision of the designated supervisor and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Aquatics Director is responsible for developing and implementing programs in aquatics for youth through senior age groups while ensuring a safe aquatic environment.  With an emphasis on ensuring the highest quality service to members and guests, the Aquatics Director will work closely with other center leaders in efforts to welcome, connect, support, and engage all members and staff.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  2. Must have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in pool management and operations and a history of aquatics programming experience. 
  3. Must hold YMCA certifications (or Red Cross equivalence) in Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Instructor, and YMCA Swimming Instructor; Trainer level certifications preferred.
  4. Must obtain a Pool Operator certification within first 6 months of employment.
  5. Must have ability to interact with people from all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles.
  6. Must be able to recruit, hire, certify and supervise qualified personnel needed for programs. 
  7. Certification of CPR/First Aid/AED/O2. 
  8. Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
  9. Satisfactory completion of criminal background checks and criminal offender registry check.
Essential Functions
  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
  • Promote character development and the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in all program areas.
  • Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  • Promote and participate in YMCA fundraising efforts to include Annual Support, Capital and United Way Campaigns.
  • Participate in promoting YMCA membership through assisting in the recruiting and retaining of members utilizing retention tools available.

Program Development

  • Develop and implement aquatics programs for youth through senior age groups in accordance with strategic plan.
  • Review and evaluate all programs to determine member satisfaction and to ensure all programs meet quality standards.
  • Organize, plan, promote, and schedule monthly programs to include small community groups and annual events for the wellness and aquatics department to include group exercise.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of aquatics.
  • Provides instruction in Lifeguarding, as well as CPR and First Aid on a regular basis.

 

Program Administration

  • Prepare and administer assigned annual budget, making revisions as necessary to meet or exceed budget guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records.  Ensure staff certifications are up to date and current.  Maintain department tracking and incident tracking for center.
  • Maintain current certifications and knowledge to ensure that YMCA facilities and equipment are in accordance with health codes.
  • Maintain a current schedule of pool activities. 
  • Maintain and upkeep pool area, facilities and filtration systems.
  • Audit inventory and order First Aid and BBP supplies for the center.
  • Maintain, monitor and document (in good working order) the facility’s main First Aid Kit and oxygen tank.  Ensure oxygen tank refilled and inspected regularly.

Team Leadership

  • Hires, develops, motivates and retains a committed staff/volunteer team passionate about the YMCA’s mission and service to members for adult programing Aquatics department.
  • Holds regular one-on-one meetings with all staff members to learn about, gauge satisfaction, and provide career development coaching/training.
  • Holds regular department staff meetings to train, coach, role-play, and provide updates on center and association-initiatives.
  • Provides leadership to the center by participating in center meetings and events, association leadership teams (Aquatics and Risk Management) and task forces as assigned to increase communication, awareness and quality in the organization.
  • Completes all job-related, supervisory, and other trainings as required.
  • Ensures all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow center Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
  • Actively participates in center leadership activities (to include Supervisor on Duty and occasional special events).

  • Acts as Center Risk Manager to include running annual facility drills for building evacuations and emergency codes. 
  • Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the Aquatics Department and center operations to ensure an excellent member experience.
