Looking for an experienced Swim Instructor to coordinate all aquatic instruction programs for our onsite and offsite aquatic programs
Job Description

Under the direction of our Senior Director of Aquatics, the Aquatic Instruction Coordinator will organize program offerings for our year-round Youth, Adult and Special Needs aquatic programs, oversee session scheduling, and oversee Swim Instructor staff.  Candidates should be aware of, and remain committed to staying current with trends, strategies and safety procedures in aquatic instruction, and be creative in developing new aquatic programs in collaboration with the Senior Director of Aquatics.

Each summer, the Aquatic Instruction Coordinator will set up and oversee swim instruction at each camp waterfront - Camp Mini, Camp Y-Ki, Steve Benko Pool and Horizon's summer program, and will act at the Waterfront Director for our indoor pre-school camp (Camp Mini) and Horizons program.

This candidate will also provide leadership and guidance in the absence of the Senior Director of Aquatics and must be age 21 or over (due to Connecticut regulations for summer responsibilities) . Applicants should be certified in CPR for Professional Rescuer and have Lifeguard certification.

Qualifications
  • Certifications in:  CPR for Professional Rescuer, YSWIM lessons (or equivalent), Lifeguard, First Aid
  • Ability to teach creatively, enthusiastically and have knowledge of skill progression
  • Experience in supervision of staff as well as program development. Minimum 1 year leadership experience preferred.
  • Must be age 21 or older due to Connecticut's regulations for summer responsibilities.
Essential Functions
  • Remain certified and updated as YMCA Instructor/Trainer and ARC, CPR/First Aid, and AED Instructor.
  • Work with the Senior Director of Aquatics to make sure instructors are/remain current in all certifications.
  • Develop and organize program offerings, session scheduling and determine instructor class assignments.
  • Work with the Senior Director of Aquatics and Pool Operations Coordinator to fill in as lifeguard, as needed.
  • Teach swim lessons each session as approved by the Senior Director of Aquatics.
  • On-site supervisor in Senior Director of Aquatics absence.
  • Keep current of new trends, strategies, safety procedures in aquatic instruction, and innovate to make our aquatic instruction and programs the best among YMCAs and local instructional facilities.
  • Develop new aquatic programs in collaboration with Senior Director of Aquatics.
  • Work with the Senior Director of Aquatics on brochure development for aquatic instruction and programs.
  • Assist with supervision and training of all instruction and program staff.
  • Recertify staff along with the Senior Director of Aquatics and Pool Operations Coordinator.
  • Assist Pool Operations Coordinator and Senior Director of Aquatics with safety drills.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and administer all aquatic programs.
  • Along with the Senior Director of Aquatics and Pool Operations Coordinator, assist in the planning and facilitation of department staff meetings and trainings.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and administer staff meetings that are engaging and fun and focus on skill development.
  • Provide parents/care-givers reports on the progress of their swimmer.
  • The Aquatic Instruction Coordinator will act as the Waterfront Director for our pre-school camp, Camp Mini and Horizons program held at the YMCA. Workdays for the summer are Monday – Friday unless otherwise noted by supervisor.
  • Workdays from fall to spring are variable. Schedule change based on classes and programs, supervisor schedule, and special events; i.e. competitive team meets and programs.
  • Follow and enforce safety standards, policies, and procedures provided by the Senior Director of Aquatics and New Canaan YMCA.
  • Communicate with staff, membership, co-workers, contact areas, and supervisor. Respond to member and community inquires and comments in a timely manner.
  • Budget time effectively; prioritize tasks, respond to day-to-day occurrences promptly, and be flexible.
  • Maintain facility cleanliness and integrity.
  • Attend professional staff meetings to keep informed of all activities at the YMCA. 
  • Assist in YMCA activities and special events, as needed, to ensure their success.
  • Plan and implement family aquatic events, along with the Senior Director of Aquatics and Pool Operations Coordinator.
