Job Description

The­­­­­­­­­­­ Chief Operating Officer is responsible for the leadership, direction and performance of YMCA of the Silicon Valley's facility branch operations, youth development programs, and overnight camp, and is responsible for their personnel/teams. The position is responsible for ensuring strong performance metrics across branch operations, developing strategic and tactical plans that strengthen operational effectiveness, designing operational efficiencies that maximize resources and assets across branches/regions and develops high-performing, collaborative and innovative organizational teams that grow the YMCA and further its Mission and Purpose while intentionally advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of ten years of commensurate experience in a YMCA membership-based organization with a track record of success and growing profitability.
  • Currently serving in a senior leadership role with responsibility for a minimum $5M budget and overseeing multiple branches and/or departments.
  • Knowledge and experience in all aspects of operations, including staff supervision and development, successful membership practices, quality program development and implementation, volunteerism, facility and property management, and sound financial practices.
  • Strong financial management skills with the ability to develop, implement and manage budget and evaluate financial performance and take action when needed.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community; track record of building authentic, constructive relationships with others.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to identify and leverage relevant data to use in planning and decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to encourage teams and staff; able to actively coach, mentor and lead through complex initiatives, change and challenges all while holding staff accountable.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines with quality and excellence.
  • Strong understanding of business imperatives, strategic priorities, and funding opportunities and proven success in strategy development, implementation and tactical execution.
  • An outstanding commitment to the YMCA Mission and Purpose -- with the proven ability to model and teach unifying behavior to support Y culture and develop high-performing and collaborative teams.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Outstanding communication skills -- including writing, presentation delivery, facilitating meetings and public speaking, both in-person and through virtual platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with community partners, third-party organizations and high-level volunteers to move work forward.
  • Ability to travel both locally and nationally.
  • Proficient with Microsoft 365 Office applications (e.g. Word, Teams, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook).
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong collaboration and influential leadership skills.
Essential Functions
  • Directly hires, supervises and leads staff supporting operations across the YMCA by providing guidance and support to ensure high levels of performance, employee engagement and contribution to the Y.
  • Provides both strategic and tactical leadership and direction to YMCA operations.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer and other key operational leadership, responsible for the development of all annual operating budgets and facilitating the budget-building processes.
  • Responsible and accountable for ensuring the strong fiscal performance of branch operations and meeting all planned financial markers/benchmarks while providing exceptional experiences that follow all federal and local laws & regulations.
  • Maintains and oversees the daily operations of the business assuring sound operations through direct management of all operations (branches, youth development, overnight camp, programs, etc.), including coordinating with human resources, legal, marketing, finance, IT, risk and other departments.
  • Drives operational growth including program expansion, member recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, new program site development, collaborations, etc.
  • Provides support and effective communication with branch boards, while providing ongoing support of board development, board participation, and Annual Campaign.
  • Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs and leads the organization in the planning, development and implementation of new program initiatives and activities, including the identification of potential areas for branch cooperative programming to accomplish YMCA goals.
  • Maintains effective communication with Board Members (Association & Branch), Operations staff, Sr. Staff, Departments, Partnerships, Vendors, etc.
  • Provides overall accountability and reporting for the Association's operational and strategic (operational) plans.
  • Monitors and analyzes key branch performance metrics to celebrate success, identify areas for improvement and track progress toward facility branch, region and organizational goals.
  • Proactively works with the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging initiatives with individual facility branches and operations teams and collaboratively works to operationalize strategies and tactics developed with operations.
  • Develops and fosters a climate of innovation, identifies potential areas for branch/region/organizational cooperative programming (including community partnerships) to accomplish YMCA goals, and works with staff groups/teams to activate these opportunities.
  • In collaboration with other key C-Suite leaders, develops, implements and monitors procedures, processes, policies that strengthen overall operations across the Association.
