maximize the pool usage. This position will lead and develop the Marin YMCA aquatics department and the staff affiliated with these programs. This includes recruiting, hiring, training/certification, supervision, and scheduling. They will uphold the safety of the aquatic environment in general by supervising the aquatics coordinator(s), swim lesson instructors, lifeguards and swim coaches. Through strong communication and outreach skills, this position will build relationships with local schools and community organizations to effectively recruit aquatics candidates and grow aquatics programming. They will assist the aquatics coordinator in managing the group lessons, private lessons, and swim team programs. They will lead regular staff trainings and will conduct in-services and trainings for the branch staff. This position will work towards completing the Team Leader level of leadership competency. This is an exempt position.

Qualifications
  • Minimum 21 years old
  • College degree or equivalent experience
  • 3-5 years working in Aquatics programming
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience
  • Availability includes afternoon, evenings and weekends
  • 2+ years previous experience including supervisory and budget experience
  • Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Current YMCA approved Lifeguard, BLS, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen certifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin
  • YUSA Lifeguard Instructor Certified, Y Swim Lesson Instructor (or equivalent)
Essential Functions
  1. Supervises all aquatic program activities to meet department and branch objectives.
  2. Recruits, hires, trains, develops, and manages all aquatics staff.
  3. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  4. Coaches staff and provides regular feedback and mentoring.
  5. Ensures records of all aquatics staff certifications are current and complete and all swim lesson instructor and lifeguard safety expectations are being met.
  6. Provide excellent customer service and engage Y members at the facility.
  7. Responsible for the scheduling of lifeguards and swim team coaches to ensure complete coverage of aquatic programming. Personally fills in when necessary.
  8. Supervises all aquatics staff including aquatics coordinator, lifeguards, swim instructors, and swim team coaches.
  9. Support aquatics coordinator to ensure swim lessons are being taught in accordance with Y standards.
  10. Maintains national and SF Association safety and program standards in aquatics in collaboration with branch Aquatics staff. Eliminates gaps between practice and policy.
  11. Audits lifeguard team weekly with various drills and quick checks.
  12. Communicates/meets regularly with associate executive director, aquatics coordinator, aquatics staff, and member services staff regarding updates on programming.
  13. Remain abreast of developments in all aspects of aquatics by reading, and attending conferences, workshops, trainings, and clinics.
  14. Host and teach quarterly lifeguard certification classes. Ensures high quality certification classes are delivered with appropriate curriculum. Maintains a tracking system for participation, attendance. Check and maintain all teaching materials and supplies.
  15. Prevent accidents by maintaining safety standards of the pool area. Enforce all health and safety standards.
  16. Maintain composure in fast paced, high stress environments while providing excellent customer service
  17. Support recruiting efforts for volunteers for branch Annual Giving Campaign.
  18. Leads all lifeguard staff meetings and trainings as required.
  19. Supports aquatics coordinator in leading quarterly swim lesson instructor in-services.
  20. Collaborate with Aquatics Coordinator to organize all components of Safety Around Water week and/or summer splash camps.
  21. Evaluate swim lessons program with aquatics coordinator through consistent feedback from participants and uses information to implement change.
  22. Update marketing regularly (flyers, website, social media, external signage) and manages pool schedule, both paper and online.
  23. Adheres to budget expectations. Excellent fiscal stewardship. Creates and monitors aquatics budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  24. Complete all mandatory ADP LMS safety training and Y-USA e-Learning before the first shift in the facility
  25. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  26. All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
