The YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley has an excellent advancement opportunity for an up-and-coming Aquatics Coordinator! We are currently seeking a results-driven leader with demonstrated impact to lead our Aquatics/Swim Team program at our North Family YMCA branch.

The qualified candidate will possess at a minimum:

  • Able to build solid relations and build on current collaborations with school partners and other community entities to grow programs.
  • Demonstrated skill in all areas of aquatics program management, including swim team.
  • Strong ability to effectively communicate with program participants, parents, members and community partners.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage multiple programs simultaneously.
  • Able to respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in emergency situations.

The Program Director -  Aquatics/Swim Team is primarily responsible for managing aquatics staff and operations and coaching the YMCA Swim Team. This person will also develop and implement new and innovative programs following trends in aquatics, swim team and other program areas.  The Program Director -  Aquatics/Swim Team will manage the assigned branch and swim team programs in accordance with the goals, objectives, and budgetary constraints set forth and in compliance with the policies and procedures of the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: The Aquatics Director is responsible for supervision of lifeguards and swim instructors.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires physical ability to remove a grown adult from a body of water, move grown adult 100 feet, lift a minimum of 50 lbs, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, swim, walk, balancing, and climb. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to talk and/or hear. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to talk and/or hear. The employee will regularly be required to see at close and distant vision, have good peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a variety of environments which can include but are not limited to, office settings, pools, gymnasiums, and outdoors. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and varying fitness equipment. The noise level in the work environment can vary from quiet to moderate during office hours and moderate to loud during event hours. This position works a varied work week as determined by the needs required to manage operations and events of which can include working evening, weekend, and additional hours to accommodate program and other activities representing the organization and branch operation.

Qualifications
  1.  Bachelor degree in related field. 
  2. Prior swim team coaching experience.
  3. 2 years prior experience working with aquatics or YMCA professional work in a related field (recreation, physical education, or related field) is required.  
  4. 1 year prior supervisory experience. 
  5. Proven record of successfully managing multiple programs simultaneously.
  6. Able to respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in emergency situations.
Essential Functions
  1. Serve as a role model to members and YMCA staff.  Live the mission, vision, and values of the YMCA movement.
  2. Responsible for management of assigned branch aquatic program staff to include, but not limited to, scheduling, recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, mentoring and performance management. 
  3. Responsible for overall supervision of the swim team program to ensure swim team program participation, enrollment, communication and performance meet or exceed goals and expectations.
  4. Develop initiatives to promote increased enrollment in the aquatics and swim team programs.
  5. Participate in association Quality Teams.
  6. Requires physically working in the aquatic and swim team programs a minimum of 50% of the time in all the various positions and branches (i.e. Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, Swim Team Coach, etc.).
  7. Stock first aid, AED and rescue kits, water chemistry supplies and maintain equipment for all assigned branches.
  8. Manage staff and pool schedules ensuring they are in line with annual budget and program and association objectives. 
  9. Instruct Lifeguard/CPR/AED/FA and Swim Instructor training as outlined on the annual association training calendar and whenever needed and ensure all staff maintain current certifications. 
  10. Facilitate regular in-service training and development opportunities for all program staff to maintain and improve skill competencies.
  11. Develop and implement strategic objectives in conjunction with the annual budget to maximize effectiveness of aquatic and swim team programming and each branch aquatics department as a whole. 
  12. Monitor expenditures and payroll in accordance with established procedures.
  13. Maintain and update accurate certifications and other required records and reports for aquatics and swim team staff and in accordance with the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley policy.
  14. Attend and engage in community functions and events to promote the YMCA mission, programs and services. 
  15. Market programs internally and externally to promote growth and sustainability.
  16. Maintain a professional image within the community and the YMCA.
  17. Must possess excellent verbal/written communication skills in order to effectively communicate with program participants, parents and members. 
  18. Manage facilities and equipment resources for programs and usage.
  19. Take part in and solicit others to participate in necessary YMCA financial development efforts, specifically the Annual Campaign.
  20. Adherence to all policies and procedures of the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley.  
  21. Understand and follow all safety rules and regulations including knowledge of emergency  procedures and location of emergency equipment.
  22. Regular and timely adherence to respective schedule/meetings.
  23. All other duties as assigned by the Branch Executive for the assigned branch.
Required Certifications
  1. Must pass background check.
  2. Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid certification (prior to hire).
  3. Mandatory Reporter.*
  4. Lifeguard Instructor certification within 6 months of hire.
  5. Swim Coach Certification, within 3 months of hire, required.
