Description: 

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, this position is responsible for assisting in the planning, organizing, directing, budgeting, and improvement of aquatics programs at the MDI YMCA. Current programs include the swim lesson programs with group and private/semi-private lessons, the MDIY Sharks Swim Team servings youth ages 5-18, lane and pool rentals, set-up and operation of the Wibit Pool Obstacle Course, lifeguarding and lifeguard training, and helping to maintain a safe, clean, and inviting environment in our Natatorium space. 

Additional responsibilities include helping to onboard, train, and supervise lifeguard and swim lesson staff. This position will act on behalf of the Aquatics Director in their absence, and, at all times, shall work within the guidelines of the aquatic policies and the mission of the YMCA.

We are a single-branch YMCA on Mount Desert Island ( sharing a rock in the Atlantic Ocean with Acadia National Park ) We have a robust Y swim team, the Sharks, swim lessons for 6-month-olds - adults, we give a free session of (7) swim lessons to all five-year-olds in our service area and are growing an endowment to keep it so forever. We have aqua aerobics classes and lap swims, we rent the pool for local diving groups, seasonal kayak companies, and other National Park-affiliated groups. We have a college that uses us for a Rec Center and offers Water Polo for them and have a 55' Wibit Pool Obstacle Course we put in months and for rentals over the shoulder seasons and weekly in the summer. We are looking for an aquatics professional to assist our Aquatics Director and Swim Coaching staff so we can do more and better programming and serve more members and guests. Qualifications

Education and Experience 

  • At least 18 years of age, with Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
  • At least two years experience in instruction and management of a wide variety of Aquatics programs and pool maintenance.
  • Experience supervising staff and developing pool schedules and class schedules, as well as good member relations and staff relations skills. 
Essential Functions

Essential Responsibilities: 

  • Provide excellent member service by exceeding member expectations.
  • Engage in active listening with members in order to build relationships, understand goals and interests, and take the initiative to assist in the achievement of those goals.
  • Responsible for scheduling and supervising (in consultation with the Aquatics Director) all lifeguard personnel.
  • Work to review/schedule aquatics staff, classes, and pool scheduling.
  • Be available to lifeguard, teach (swim lessons, swim classes), and coach (swim team).
  • Be available to answer questions from members, program participants, and staff.
  • In conjunction with the Aquatics Director, oversee all required safety and quality training, drills, and documentation.
  • Share responsibility with supervisors for the care and maintenance of facility and related program equipment.
  • Participate in the Annual Campaign and Aquathon fundraisers and educate staff and members on the cause of the Y.
  • Periodically act as the manager on duty for the building in the evenings or weekends.
  • Assist in ordering equipment purchases and Aquatics/First Aid supplies as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and essential records for control, evaluation, and reporting to committees, the Board, and the Aquatics Director.
  • Aid in implementing special events that relate to the Aquatic Department and the YMCA as a whole.
  • Remain current in required and voluntary training in order to promote growth of mind and spirit and character values for all.

This position needs to be Lifeguard certified, Swim Lesson certified, and work to get pool operator certified.
