Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Equestrian Director’s primary responsibilities will be the overall operation of the Equestrian Department including programming for YMCA Camp Eberhart.

Qualifications

·       High School Diploma or GED

·       Experience in a field related to horsemanship, and the care of livestock.

·       Be able to work with a wide range of people who make up the YMCA of Greater Michiana’s constituencies, including all ages, races, and religions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

·       Physical Mobility: walking, climbing, stairs, standing, kneeling, bending, leaning, stooping, and sitting for extended periods.

·       Physical Dexterity: the ability to use telephone, computer, electronic equipment, exercise equipment, office equipment (fax, copier, stapler, etc.), tools, and machinery as needed.

·       Lifting: ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

·       Sensory Requirements: the ability to hear, listen, speak, smell, touch, taste, see and distinguish colors.

·       Ability to drive vehicles (golf carts, tractors, car, van and/or bus)

·       Must have and maintain valid class E driver’s license with a good record and be able to operate YMCA vehicles in a safe manner.

·       Ability to maintain alertness for several hours at a time.

·       Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.

·       Ability to tolerate extreme temperature conditions (heat and/or cold)

·       Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.

Essential Functions

1.    Manage the Programs for YMCA Camp Eberhart, as well as hire riding instructors and staff for these programs.

2.    Have available horses and equipment for scheduled programs.

3.    Responsible for the quality of YMCA Camp Eberhart programs.

4.    Herd management includes buying, selling, trading, and maintaining a healthy working herd with the camp director.

5.    Supervise and assist in the aesthetics, upkeep, and maintenance of the equine program areas, equipment, barn, pastures, pens, and stables.

6.    Yearly hay contracts should be bid out and negotiated with a signed contract in early spring of each year.

7.    Responsible for participating and contributing to the annual income and expense budget for equestrian programs.

8.    Assist with fundraising, as assigned.

9.    Assist in the enhancement of the overall service and expertise levels among program staff through consistent leadership, positive example-setting, special-event planning, and counseling.

10.  Understand the mental, social & physical aspects of working with families, groups, and older adults.

11.  Budget Management, multitasking, problem-solving, computer skills, and personnel management.

12.  Upgrade and continue a progressive riding program with awards attached.

13.  Manage trail rides, homeschool, and camp programs.

14.  Maintain a positive working relationship with other staff and departments of the YMCA of Greater Michiana.

15.  Hire, train, review, and supervise all staff.

16.  Performs all other duties as assigned.
