Job Description

Under the supervision of the Aquatic Director, swim instructors will provide aquatic instruction using guidelines of the YMCA Youth Swim Lessons to individuals enrolled in swim classes and promote the general safety of all swimmers.

Qualifications
  • Minimum age 15.
  • Must be able to frequently perform the following physical activities; climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand for extended periods of time, walk, lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and communicate verbally.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of maturity, patience, dependability, and the desire to work with all ages, especially children.
  • Must be able to visually see all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Must be able to adequately hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Must possess ability to remain alert and maintain concentration for long periods of time to ensure safety of participants.
  • Must possess ability to make independent and sound decisions in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Must demonstrate a high level of maturity, patience, dependability, sound judgment and the desire to work with all ages, especially youth.
  • Must be able to show initiative in the absence of supervision.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner.
  • Must maintain a neat and professional appearance.

 

Essential Functions
  • Must possess ability to lead the instruction of participants and effectively supervise and motivate class participants to reach their individual goals.
  • Responsible for maintaining a working knowledge of and ability to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Responsible for instructing and evaluating swim lesson participants in accordance with YMCA guidelines, preparing lesson plans accordingly.
  • Responsible for building effective, authentic relationships with students and parents.
  • Responsible for conveying information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate.
  • Submitting completed records on time (i.e. attendance, progress reports).
  • Organizing and putting away needed class equipment. Reporting any facility or equipment irregularities to supervisor in writing.
  • Responsible for the safety of participants.  
  • Following and enforcing all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
  • Responsible for being knowledgeable and prepared to implement emergency procedures. 
  • Reporting all incidents/accidents on the appropriate form and providing to supervisor within 24 hours of event.
  • Working hours as scheduled; including beginning and ending class on time; remaining after class to answer participant/parent questions as needed and cleaning up supplies.
  • Attending all required training sessions and scheduled meetings.
  • Supporting Strong Community Campaign fundraising.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Must attend New Employee Orientation within 30 days of hire
  • Understand and abide by all policies and procedures as set forth by the association
  • Work a schedule that reflects the needs of the branch
