Job Description

Our School-Age and Camp Y-Ki Director will be responsible for planning, supervising, and implementing creative, high-quality programs including:

Camp Y-Ki - an exciting outdoor camp experience for school age children (grades K-8) offering activities such as swimming, archery, art & crafts, sports, camp songs, outdoor adventures and special events, all geared to help campers build self-esteem, confidence, independence and responsibility.  

School-Age Programming - oversee all aspects of youth recreation, including oversight of the Youth Program Coordinator.  School-age programming will include afterscool programs such as Kids Unlimited, Ski/Board club, Middle School Madness, and Vacation Camp programs during days off from school.

Community Relations & Events – network with other area groups and organizations to collaborate on activities that support youth development and healthy living, and host free community events each year

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Human Services, or related field desired

Minimum of two years’ experience developing, implementing, and evaluating programs for youth.

Minimum of one-year supervisory experience. 

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Creative thinker with a history of applying innovation in programming.

Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to build community relationships.

Basic skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Must be organized, with strong attention to detail.

Ability to design programs that appeal to a diverse population.

Ability to teach/lead children and adults.

Ability to supervise and instruct other staff in all program areas. 

Flexible, highly organized, and patient individual.

Must be able to present oneself professionally with peers, staff, community, and New Canaan YMCA members.

Essential Functions

·         Regularly demonstrate behaviors in each of the YMCA Four Core Values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

·         Direct and supervise program activities to meet YMCA objectives (see detailed list below).

·         Work closely with YMCA Directors as needed and attend monthly Director staff meetings.

·         Co-supervise the Youth Program Coordinator.

·         Responsible for the development, implementation, and adherence to the budget, financial and business procedures of the YMCA.

·   Support the Preschool and Family Events Director with special events; encourage staff participation in order to ensure the events success.

  • Attend YMCA trainings as assigned by supervisor.

 

Youth Development:

School Age (elementary through middle school) Programming

  • Co-supervise the Youth Program Coordinator in the areas of youth recreation, summer camp, and birthday parties.
  • Support the Youth Program Coordinator with development and implementation of programs currently running and would like to continue: Ski/Board, Youth at the Y, Middle School Madness.
  • Support the Youth Program Coordinator to create additional afterschool programs recreation for school-age and middle school children.
  • Oversee the hiring and training of all staff/volunteers in youth recreation programs.
  • Supervise the Kids Unlimited afterschool program following OEC requirements and remain in ratio each weekday.
  • Hire and train all Kids Unlimited staff to meet OEC requirements.
  • Plan and implement week-long and day-long Vacation Camp Programs for all days off from school listed on the public-school calendar. Following ratios and OEC requirements.
  • Awareness of latest trends relative to population served.
  • With the Youth Program Coordinator develop, implement, and oversee program activities which meet the needs of the community.
  • Recruit, coordinate, and assist in training of staff/volunteers.

     

      Camp Y-Ki 

  •  Act as Camp Director and remain onsite (Kiwanis Park) at Camp Y-Ki throughout the camp day and refer to responsibilities labeled “Camp Director Responsibilities”.
  •  Communicate with Parks and Rec department any concerns/needs of the park, with supervisor approval. And ensure follow up.
  • Hire, train, supervise, evaluate and work directly with Co Assistant Directors and LIT/CIT Coordinator in the planning and implementation of summer camp, including the LIT and CIT program.
  •  Employ and train all necessary staff, develop, and maintain budget, license preparation and management, public relations, and day-to-day planning/scheduling.
  •  Conduct staff orientation for the Camp Y-Ki staff.
  • Supervise counselors and volunteers on a daily basis to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants.
  • Plan daily activity schedule and special events with the staff for camp participants.
  •  Keep detailed records on attendance and incidents/accidents.
  • Communicate any special circumstances, problems, accidents or activities to the VP of Family and Youth Development.
  • Plan and conduct weekly staff meetings.
  • Responsible for daily clean up and maintenance of all program areas.
  • Work directly with Specialists to plan and implement camp daily scheduled activities, special events, and daily assemblies.
  • Plan and implement Specialty Camps.
  • Substitute throughout camp when needed.

 

 

Healthy Living:

      Adventure Guides

  • Plan and implement activities for Adventure Guides (Y USA program) inside and outside of the YMCA.
  •  Attend all camp outs.
  • Plan, promote and hold monthly Leadership meetings.
  • Promote program in all pre-schools, nursery schools (to 4-year-old programs that are moving up to kindergarten) and elementary schools throughout the community and Rainbow Station.
  • Develop, plan, implement, and oversee family program activities and events which meet the needs of the community.

 

General Administration

  • With the VP of Family and Youth Development, develop and maintain assigned program budget lines and take appropriate action to maintain the fiscal integrity of the departments.
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule and direct personnel and volunteers as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/families regarding all program information.
  • With VP of Family and Youth Development, review and evaluate staff performance. Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.

Committee and Community Relations

 

  • Network with outside groups and organizations to promote YMCA programming and events.      
  • Promote the YMCA to the community. Represent the YMCA’s interests to community organizations and special interest groups- particularly youth-oriented groups.
  • Interact with representatives and students from the New Canaan private and public schools (preschools, elementary and high school) to promote YMCA events and programs.
  • Network with YMCA Peer Community Groups through YPN.
