Camp Description

Discovery Camp is a traditional day camp program that allows our campers to experience everything that our camps have to offer. This off-site camp program is located to allow for the full use of our outdoor programs and curriculum.

A packed session of swim lessons and instructional sports to science, arts, music and much more keep our campers engaged and excited every day. Our age-appropriate programs allow our campers to grow, building upon their progression in each new skill and activity.

Job Description

Under the supervision of the Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director is responsible for providing direct leadership and guidance to Camp Counselors in supervision of groups of children in various formats and activities.  The Assistant Camp Director is assigned supervision of Discovery Camp and assists in supervising the Specialty Camp programs. This includes organizing and motivating staff in direct leadership of camp participants during their time at the camp and at off-site trips, and maintaining a safe and fun day camp environment.  In this role you will work with children through the ages of potentially 3 years old through 14 years old (depending on assignment).  You will teach swim lessons or supervise free swim in the pool and assist/lead many of other physical activities.

Qualifications

1.      Must be at least 21 years of age and possess or seek current certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Epi-Pen Certification and Responding to Emergencies First Aid, in addition to camp supervisory experience and hands-on knowledge of age-appropriateness.  

2.      Must be able to create and transmit program curricula to Counselors for direct instruction and execution of the daily schedule.  

3.      Must have the ability to supervise Camp Counselors and the ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, YMCA members, program participants, parents and the general public is essential.

4.      Must be able to commit to 3 days week for the month of June to assist with camp pre-work. 

5.      Must work the entire summer camp season (June 30- August 15), regular hours will be 8:30am-4:30pm. Must be available to start day at 8:00am and work until 6:00pm at least one day per week.

6.      Must possess strong skills in competencies listed above.

7.      Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Essential Functions

Incumbent will assist the Camp Director in all of the following functions:

1.      Provide direct leadership and supervision to Camp Counselors and responsibility for all assigned campers.

2.      Direct supervision of Group Leaders and Activity Specialists.

3.      Assist the Camp Director in supervision of the Specialty Camp programs.

4.      Foster understanding of and an active rapport with Camp Counselors.

5.      Set the tone and provide guidance to staff and assigned groups of camp participants.

6.      Assume direct responsibility for the whereabouts and the business of every Camp Counselor and camp participant in the assigned groups.

7.      Plan, coordinate and execute camp curriculum in accordance with the specific needs and interests of the YMCA and all participants involved.

8.      Develop organized plans and structure for instruction/management of all camp activities.

9.      Project a positive and enthusiastic image on the job at all times, to include wearing YMCA-labeled gear every day.

10.   Responsible for check requests and time sheet approvals.

11.   Cultivate strong working relationships with YMCA members, staff, children and parents.

12.   Effectively cooperate in the administration of all camp policies and programs.

13.   Attend all required staff meetings, trainings, and special events.

14.   Assist in training other staff/volunteers as needed.

15.   Oversee and actively participate in daily swim time in the water with the children as necessary.
