Job Description

The YMCA of Greater Richmond is seeking a committed, experienced Controller who is responsible for the design, implementation and monitoring of sound financial practices, internal controls, effective financial reporting processes, and regulatory compliance to ensure the continued financial integrity and viability of our Association. 

 

Qualifications

Excellent oral and written communication, analytical and financial skills, organizational, problem-solving, and computer skills are necessary. The successful candidate will have experience working in a multi-location environment and the ability to oversee and manage centralized as well as decentralized accounting and financial functions. 

A college degree in accounting/finance is required. A Certified Public Accountant certification or related graduate degree is required. A minimum of ten years of direct accounting experience is required, with fund accounting and non-profit experience preferred. Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial and accounting reporting systems, cost control principles and federal and state financial regulations required.

Essential Functions

The Controller responsible for the design, implementation and monitoring of sound financial practices, internal controls, effective financial reporting processes, and regulatory compliance for the entire Association to ensure the continued financial integrity and viability of the YMCA of Greater Richmond in support of its mission.

  • Oversight of accounting operations including financial reporting, general accounting, fixed assets and financial systems. 
  • Produces accurate, timely internal financial statements and reports in accordance with internal policies and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Oversees the annual external audit and with the CFO develops the annual budget. 
  • Leads external financial reporting to lenders, grantors, and regulatory bodies, including the annual audit, IRS Form 990 and YUSA annual report.
  • Develops, maintains, and evaluates effective internal controls, accounting efficiencies, financial practices including financial reporting, accounting functions, budgeting, finance, and treasury functions.
  • Develops and evaluates financial training programs for all branches. Develops financial forecasts, pro forma projections and financial impact evaluations.
  • Serves as financial counselor to branch staff at all levels regarding accounting, internal controls, financial review and analysis and budgeting. 
  • Works with Advancement department on the appropriate recording and reporting of contributions, including grant funding. 
  • Assists the CFO and other leadership staff in the development, maintenance and evaluation or business systems and processes throughout the Association.
