Camp Birkett is a day camp situated on 11 acres along the shore of Silver Lake, approximately 16 miles north west of the Ann Arbor YMCA. Camp Birkett is an ACA accredited day camp with 105 years of camping history, with the space to serve 140 campers per session.
Summer Camp jobs with the Ann Arbor Y offer invaluable skill-building, leadership training, and enrichment opportunities in a fun high energy environment. Camp staff assist and lead groups of campers in various camp programs and activities each day. Camp staff are responsible for the general safety, development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in their group. What qualifications do I need to have in order to be a Day Camp Counselor?
High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
One (1) year experience in working with children is preferred.
Must demonstrate creativity, enthusiasm and dedication.
Must have experience working with youth in a group setting and creating and implementing lesson plans.
Additionally, this person should possess the skills necessary to provide safe, appropriate and fun activities.
Must be CPR and First Aid certified prior to the beginning of camp*
Multilingual ability is preferred.
What qualifications do I need to have in order to be an Activity Specialist?
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Must have 1-year experience in working with children.
Must demonstrate creativity, enthusiasm and dedication.
Must have experience working with youth in a group setting and creating and implementing lesson plans.
Additionally, s/he should possess the skills necessary to provide safe, appropriate and fun activities.
Must be CPR and First Aid certified prior to the beginning of camp*
Experience in area of specialty is required.
Multilingual ability is preferred.
What qualifications do I need to be a Waterfront Director?
Previous experience in camping.
Current certification in lifeguarding, first aid and CPR
Prior experience in the development and delivery of recreational programs.
Experience in supervising others especially peers is desirable.
What qualifications do I need to be the Boating Specialist?
Current certification in lifeguard training or equivalent.
Current instructional certification in specified craft or related experience in that craft.
Current certification in first aid and CPR. Advanced certification may be required based on camp location and site of delivery of aquatic programs.
Prior experience at a waterfront similar to the camp.
What qualifications do I need to be a Health Officer?
Maintains health for all of camp - uses camp medical standing orders and camp health officer training to guide decision making.
Maintains health log.
In charge of health room/cabinets/boxes.
Main person for serious first aid.
Provides consultations to staff: First Aid as needed.
In charge of med passing - hands off emergency meds to GCs to keep on their person.
Does beginning of the week health and safety checks for all campers.
Point of contact to parents - child’s health. Also calls home for camper illness/injury
Work with camp administration, other counselors, parents and campers to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all campers in accordance with the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
Assist in implementing a weekly schedule for your camp group.
Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, sports, songs, games, opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, Family Night, etc.
Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
Ensure that the camp facilities are kept clean, organized, and free of litter.
Communicate with parents about participants’ experiences and report concerns to Camp Leadership.
Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.
Assist in mentoring CIT’s to develop a deeper understanding of leadership and counseling skills.
These are not the only duties to be performed some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.
