Job Description

The CFO at the Middletown YMCA will play a critical role in the organization with responsibility for select financial matters including oversight to payroll.  The CFO provides direction and leadership for the YMCA of Middletown business operations and strategic initiatives, assists with the development of policies, and ensures their implementation.  The CFO will also focus on enhancing day-to-day operations and service delivery while establishing internal controls for accurate finance and accounting processes.  This multi-faceted leader will work closely with the CEO and Board of Directors in strategy formulation and must possess expertise in all areas of financial management from basic accounting to managing complex operations.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or equivalent MBA, CPA or CMA is strongly preferred. 10+ years of experience in Accounting and Financial Management is required.
  • Technical knowledge and experience in accounting and finance, payroll, cash management, budget development, insurance and risk management, contract negotiations, IRS regulations, financial and investment planning, not-for-profit accounting standards, banking and debt financing instruments.
  • Knowledge of effective financial systems, including experience with system selection and new system implementation.
  • Advanced proficiency in computer skills including ability to provide deliverables using the Microsoft 365 suite of applications.
  • Proven record of accomplishment of driving process improvement and efficiencies across an organization.
  • Professional and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build strong and lasting relationships
    Experience with effectively leading and managing direct and indirect staff teams.
Essential Functions
  • Manage and monitor financial operations, oversee preparation of financial reports and analysis including forecast scenarios.
  • Consult regularly with members of the finance team and department leads on their financial performance including budget development and review, revenue and expense controls, and financial planning through consultations and training.
  • Represent the YMCA with key community organizations, and maintain a good working relationship with auditors, bankers, investment managers’ attorneys and other professional advisors. 
  • Take the initiative to develop financial strategies and recommendations for the CEO and others on the leadership team to review that enhance growth, program services, and financial well-being of the organization.
  • Provide accurate, consistent, and timely information, financial data and support to the CEO and others engaged in administrative and management function.
  • Oversee the financial reporting and analysis aspects of grants in close collaboration with the Development Department. 
  • Review tax returns as prepared by external auditors and prepare, as needed other reports for submission to management and external authorities as required on a timely basis. 
  • Work closely with other members of the finance department to liaison with the external auditor in order to assure that current accounting standards and legal requirements are met.
  • Work directly with assigned committee(s) of the Board (e.g. finance, investment, audit, etc.) to develop policies, monitor their implementation and meet the related needs of the Board. 
  • Oversee all banking and financing functions for the organization including tax-exempt bond transactions. 
    Primary responsibility for the development of the annual operating budget in collaboration with other members of the finance department and the leadership team of the association.
  • Evaluate current processes at the association to ensure all proper controls over cash deposits expenditure, purchasing and petty cash in order to safeguard the organization’s assets. 
  • Review and negotiate select contracts and agreements of the organization.
    Assists the CEO in any other projects, as assigned.
