Nestled in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains and situated on beautiful Lost Lake between Elma and Shelton, Camp Bishop provides an excellent setting for the YMCA’s traditional overnight camping program.
Serve as a positive mentor to 10-12 youth, ages 5-13, in an overnight camp setting. Assistant Counselors live in a cabin/yurt alongside their campers and facility camp life for their campers.
Assistant Counselors serve as co-counselor to the Cabin Counselor, developing leadership skills and learning on the job. CITs develop camper character and values; fosters cabin community, encouraging group leadership, and developing stewardship.
Instruct 2-3 skill-based activities per day. Provide a quality experience to campers & families focused on YMCA
core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. Represents the YMCA and self in a professional manner
of safety and fun.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum 16 years of age.
• Desire to mentor and impact youth in a positive way.
• Positive attitude and previous experience with children and diverse populations
• Knowledge and skills in program activities and related equipment set-up, and the ability to instruct
participants in age-appropriate techniques.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience in child Leadership and/or related activities experience.
• Knowledge and skills in camper and peer leadership, group and interpersonal dynamics, child behavior and
typical camp activities.
• American Red Cross or Y-USA Lifeguard Training certification, American Red Cross or Y-USA Swim Lesson
Instructor certification, or other program specific certification or training.

PROGRAM DELIVERY
• Be a positive mentor/role model to youth.
• Promote a positive and inclusive environment that fosters fun, safety, intentional and meaningful experiences
for campers.
• Lead by example and participate in activities alongside campers and co-counselor to foster a sense of safety
and trust.
• May be asked to lead large or small group activities as a part of camp day.
• Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes
but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times
• Recognize individual and group situations and effectively resolve conflicts based on camp values and
procedures.
• Foster a culture of campers first, where all campers are made to feel they are the priority.
• Maintain open communication and proactively work to build strong relationships with Co-leaders and
Leadership staff.
• Provide support to cabin counselor in providing supervision and comfort, sanitation, programming, and report
any safety concerns immediately (intruders, bees). This includes during the day and overnight.
• Support a culture of learning and recognize that leaders learn through experience.
• Maintain camper and staff confidentiality at all times. This is including, but is not limited to, camper health
history, personal history, and camper hygiene issues. Maintain camper confidentiality regarding shared
personal information in accordance with child abuse prevention policies.
• Complete all required online and in-person training.
• Follow all YMCA of Grays Harbor staff policies and guidelines.
• Follow all YMCA of Grays Harbor policies and procedures related to the prevention and/disclosure of child
abuse.
• Other duties, as assigned.
