Job Description

The Waterfront Director provides direct supervision and oversight to overall operation of waterfront area including activities, scheduling, supervision of lifeguard counselors, and equipment inspection and upkeep. Ensures the supervision and safety of campers at all times.

$95/day, Staff returning to the same or equivalent job for the second season: $102/day, Staff returning to the same or equivalent job for three or more seasons: $110/day

Qualifications

What we're looking for in an applicant

Water Safety Instructor or YMCA Progressive Swim Instructor Certification

Current state approved first aid certification

Current state approved CPR certification

First Aid/CPR for the professional rescuer.

One or more years of college preferred.

Two or more years’ experience in waterfront experience.

Current Lifeguard certification.

This is a driving-preferred role that could potentially involve transporting campers as an “authorized driver” for the Y. To become an authorized driver, you must have had a driver's license for at least 3 years and with a driving record that meets Y standards (no more than 2 moving violations within the last 3 years, no major incidents such as reckless driving, DUI/DWI, no tickets 20+ miles above the speed limit etc.). As driving roles are safety sensitive, you would also need pass a drug screen that will test for impairing substances including marijuana.

*Due to state-specific reporting requirements in our fleet management system, we are not currently able to enroll California Driver's License holders as Authorized Drivers.

Preferred Education/Experience

Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).

Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.

Experience with anti-racism practices and coalition building.

Essential Functions

What you'll be doing

If applicable, Directs and coordinates the Community Swim Program which includes but is not limited to Youth Swim Lessons, Day Camp Open Swim, and Family Swim activities.

Facilitates program activities that are developmentally appropriate and which promote camper skill and character development. Leads and assists with facilitation of all waterfront clinics and other all-camp special events.

Maintains proper ratio of 1 lifeguard for 25 campers and 1 staff person for every 10 campers.

Maintains safety and cleanliness standards including pool chemicals, if applicable.

Takes special note of individual camper health needs or concerns on a daily basis.

Communicates personal or staff needs to supervisor in a timely manner.

Attends staff meetings and trainings.

Maintains waterfront schedule.

Schedules and facilitates emergency waterfront drills.

Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates at a seasonal residential camp, both inside and outdoors. Staff typically live in either shared cabins with campers, or in shared and housing with staff for the duration of employment. Specific housing depends on position and availability.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  This position requires the ability to occasionally lift store or janitorial products and supplies, up to 50 pounds.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time, shift position.  A typical shift is 8:30am-5:00pm with a 30-minute, unpaid lunch break.  The usual camp workweek is six day on and one day off, including training, staff meetings, and regular duties.
