The Fitness Center Director will lead and manage the operations of our fitness center, overseeing the fitness center floor staff, personal trainers, massage therapists, and group exercise instructors. This role is responsible for managing the department’s operations and budget while ensuring an exceptional fitness experience for our members. Additionally, the Director will oversee equipment maintenance and facility upkeep, ensuring a safe, clean, and well-functioning environment that supports the health and wellness of all members.
· Minimum of three (3) years of experience in fitness management, staff supervision, or leadership within a gym, wellness center, or related setting.
· Nationally recognized fitness certifications in personal training and/or group exercise (e.g., ACE, NASM, ACSM, NSCA, AFAA, or equivalent).
· CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
· Multiple group exercise certifications in formats such as cycling, yoga, Pilates, strength training, or functional fitness.
· Have or are willing to complete training and certifications for YMCA-specific group exercise, health and wellness programs, fitness programs, or specialist training.
· Proven ability to recruit, hire, train, supervise, and develop fitness professionals, including personal trainers, group exercise instructors, and floor staff.
· Experience creating and managing group exercise schedules, class programming, and special fitness events.
· Knowledge of equipment maintenance, gym safety protocols, and facility management best practices.
· Budget management experience, including revenue generation and expense oversight.
· Experience in budget development, program marketing, public relations, and fundraising.
· Ability to collaborate with marketing department to promote programs and attract new participants.
· Strong knowledge of computer software applications, including Windows Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and familiarity with membership and fitness-related software.
· Child Abuse Prevention online course is required no later than 60 days into employment.
· Oversee the fitness department, including staff supervision, class coordination, scheduling, and budget management.
· Directly supervise group exercise instructors, personal trainers, and massage therapists.
· Teach group exercise classes and serve as a substitute instructor as needed.
· Manage the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, and performance evaluation of department staff.
· Ensure all instructors meet education, certification, and continuing education requirements.
· Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of fitness spaces, including group exercise and cycling studios.
· Collaborate with marketing department to effectively promote fitness programs.
· Supervise fitness center floor staff, ensuring adequate coverage and member support.
· Lead department meetings and continuing education for trainers and floor staff.
· Oversee equipment maintenance and repairs in a timely manner.
· Manage the new member orientation program, including scheduling, facilitation, and follow-ups.
· Serve as the primary contact for all fitness programming and instructors.
· Develop, monitor, and achieve annual budget goals, ensuring revenue and expense targets are met.
· Represent the department in branch committees and meetings as needed.
· Ensure all YMCA policies, safety standards, and best practices are upheld.
· Perform additional duties as assigned.
