Camp Description

Camp Chief Ouray is the residential camp for kids at YMCA of the Rockies. Making a difference in the life of a young person, learning skills that will help you throughout future jobs, and gaining lifelong friends in the process is a wonderful way to spend your summer. Only 20 minutes to Rocky Mountain National Park, Camp Chief Ouray offers scenic views in every direction. The camp is located on the property of Snow Mountain Ranch in Granby, Colorado.

Job Description

The Wrangler provides support for the barn facilities and program, under the direction of the Barn Director and Assistant Barn Director. The Wrangler is responsible for the program delivery of the equestrian and riding program. They are expected to work collaboratively with Barn Staff to ensure each camper’s physical, social, and emotional health and safety needs are met. They also ensure the horse herd is cared for, the barn facility and equipment cleanliness are maintained, and all barn safety protocols are met.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

• Preferably be at least 19 years of age, and have experience working with youth in a summer 

camp setting

• Ability to prioritize tasks and efficiently manage time.

• Must have current certification in CPR/First Aid or be willing to obtain certification

• Must have experience working with horses and/or western riding 

• All other duties as assigned

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR ALL CAMP CHIEF OURAY STAFF:

• Create a safe space for all campers, families, and staff. Promote safe work practices to allow for 

development and growth for all.

• Possess the social and emotional skills necessary to build rapport and positive relationships, 

putting camper needs first

• Respond to camper and customer requests for service, troubleshoot problems and develop 

solutions in a patient and respectful manner.

• Contribute to a cooperative and positive camp community, be a team player

• Be responsible for the upkeep of the camp facility and cleanliness of camp. Report any repairs in 

a timely manner. 

• Assist other departments as needed

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR WRANGLER: 

• Participate in barn and staff training prior to working with campers

• Assist the Barn and Assistant Barn Directors with paperwork, maintaining accurate reports of 

camper progression, documentation of horse herd care, and curriculum development 

• Assist the Barn and Assistant Barn Directors in the maintenance and care of the facility and herd

• Be concerned with the needs of camper development and growth, guiding the individual camper 

in participations in group, unit and all-camp activities. 

• During programming times, responsible for delivery of curriculum, set up of areas, and cleaning 

of supplies as it relates to the Riding Program 

• Assist in the development of different riding level curriculum for western riding

• Be qualified to, or willingness to obtain skills to, set up, teach, and maintain one or more camp 

activities. Develop lesson plans for, and teach in, one or more camp activity programs. 

• Assume weekend camp responsibilities for one weekend of the summer.
