The Opportunity

We are looking for a highly skilled, passionate leader and visionary who can build upon the foundation of this healthy and thriving YMCA.  A committed board of 13 volunteers and a dedicated staff of 46 FT employees (7 direct reports to the CEO) and 155 PT staff drive this $5.3 million association.     

The CEO must align the day-to-day work of the Y with long-term goals, and lead the organization, its staff, volunteer board and members in promoting the Y’s mission while expanding membership, programs, and services to address community needs.  

The next leader of the Keene Family YMCA must be able to lead a strong staff team and manage an effective operation. Candidates must demonstrate their ability to identify the competencies and expertise required by the organization and attract and retain the talent needed to achieve the organization's goals. This individual will ensure that staff performance and development lead to superior outcomes in programs, member satisfaction, and engagement as well as community engagement.     

The successful candidate will also show an ability to create positive and strategic relationships with influential leaders and community members and leverage those relationships to enhance support for the Y mission. The CEO is expected to be the face of the organization, upholding the highest standards and values of the Y; able to maintain a culture of integrity, high ethical standards, accountability, and performance, creating a spirit of inclusiveness, mission and cause that reinforces, encourages, and promotes values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring.

Position Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Chief Executive Officer at the Keene Family YMCA sets the strategic direction of the organization; oversees its financial stability, staffing, development and operations; and positions the Y as a community convener and collaborator to address critical social issues, including being the largest childcare provider in Cheshire County.

Keene Family YMCA Facts

What began as a small religious study group in 1885 has grown to an organization of over 6,000 members. The first meeting was at 29 West Street on the 4th floor of Lamson Hall, which became the first YMCA building. That building was dedicated in 1893. The Takodah YMCA and the Keene Family YMCA were one Y from 1929 to 1958. In September 1958, the Y moved to 38 Roxbury Street, the former Odd Fellows building. It was expanded in 1978 and then again in 1985 with a fitness center. Following a very successful campaign, the YMCA moved to its current location at 200 Summit Rd in December 2011.

Branch/Facility Information 

The Keene Family YMCA is on a 10 acre campus with a 66,000 sq ft building featuring two swimming pools, Basketball court, Gymnastics center, 1 racquetball court, 1 ninja rig room, 3 exercise studios, an indoor track, health and wellness space that includes cardio and strength training equipment, 3 locker rooms, 6 early learning childcare rooms, and one Afterschool Care room.  The Y also has an after-school care program at the Church of the Nazarene and 4 early learning classrooms at the Jonathon Daniels School.   The Y also offers Camp Wakonda summer camp for 100 kids on the main campus.  The current facility opened in December of 2011.

Area Amenities and Community Benefits

Keene is a quintessential New England town and is the home to Keene State College and Antioch University New England. For the outdoor enthusiast, you can find a wide range of sports and activities including hiking, biking, canoeing, skiing, fishing, hunting and much more. Keene is the largest town in Mt. Monadnock region. Lakes, rivers, mountains and woods abound in NH. The arts are well represented through the Colonial Theater located in Keene and the Peterborough Players Professional Theater located in Peterborough NH. Qualifications
  1. Accredited 4-year college degree or equivalent experience.
  2. Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  3. Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
  4. Must be able to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  5. Have the ability to develop innovative programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered for both economy and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.
  6. Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants.
  7. Fiscally sound business management approach.
  8. A proven record of accomplishment of progressive budgetary leadership and advanced fiscal management practices.
  9. YMCA Organizational Leader Certification or ability to achieve within 3 years.

 

Essential Functions

Key Performance Objectives 

Build and Lead Staff: Hire, motivate, nurture, and retain excellent staff and administrators. Allow them to flourish and represent the diversity of the communities we serve. Hold staff accountable for clearly stated objectives and motivate the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie, inclusion, and sense of mission. Advance Operating Performance and Increase Financial Capacity to Drive Our Mission: Engage appropriate staff and the board to develop and implement an annual tactical plan to achieve our strategic goals.  Successfully manage the Y’s operations by delivering programs that engage our community, quickly addressing issues that arise, and anticipating future needs.  Guide all department leaders to establish a balanced budget, monitor results and trends, adjust programming to assure fiscal sustainability, grow to meet the needs of our region, and increase our financial capacity to drive our mission. Position the Y as a Vital Partner for Community Change: Serve as an ambassador for the mission, purpose, and vision for the YMCA within the community. Possess the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, while always upholding the highest standards and values of the Y. Ensure your Y is seen as a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and each other. Key competencies: Communication & Influence, Engaging Community, Collaboration  

Implement and Advance Strategic Plan: Work effectively with volunteers, community leaders, and key staff, to implement and advance a strategic plan that addresses the needs of the communities served by the Y and includes defined organizational strategies, a clear implementation plan with deliverables, and measurable goals. Key competencies: Change Leadership, Communication & Influence, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Program/Project Management

 

Salary Range: $120,000 - $150,000 per annum with annual performance evaluations

Benefits: Retirement contribution (7% contributed by the Y and 5% contributed by employee), vacation plan, health plan and other benefits per personnel policy included. New Hampshire does not currently have a state income tax. 

Residency Expectation: The CEO is expected to be highly engaged and visible in our community. Living in the YMCA’s service area is required.
