Sports Director

The J.F. Hurley Family YMCA in Salisbury, NC is seeking a passionate servant leader for the full-time position of Sports Director.
Job Description

General Function

Under the direct supervision of the Associate Executive Director and consistent with the Christian mission, the Sports Director is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating all sports programs and summer specialty/sports camp programs at the J.F. Hurley Family YMCA, including but not limited to soccer, flag football, volleyball, basketball, pickleball. The Sports Director will also work directly with the Youth Development Director and assist with the programming of the participants in the Summer Camp Programs.

Qualifications

KNOW HOW 

  • Incumbent must pass YMCA background checks and successfully complete and maintain CPR/AED and First Aid certifications or the ability to acquire them within 30 days of employment 
  • BA/BS degree in related recreation field desired
  • Minimum 2 years experience working with children and sports programs 
  • Must be proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PlayerSpace, and the Internet
  • Must be attentive to details, be able to work with and meet deadlines, take initiative to develop and provide information and controls necessary for efficient office operations  
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must have excellent human relation skills
  • Must be able to take initiative in making decisions and solving problems in the areas of assigned responsibilities
  • Must work independently with little supervision
  • Must be customer service oriented
  • Valid NC Drivers License
  • Availability to work nights and weekends

Essential Functions

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES

  • Ensure all registration procedures are planned, on time, and accurate before each registration begins.
  • Complete teams, rosters, coaches, and practice schedules before the beginning of each season.
  • Work closely with ALL branches and membership director to ensure front-line staff are equipped with
  • appropriate information to serve members.
  • Work closely with the MarComm to ensure registration forms, handbooks, and sponsor marketing is accurate and produced in a timely manner, and posted to website sites and social media accounts.
  • Develop positive relationships with all staff, parents, and coaches.
  • Create accurate game schedules and input into platform to share with parents and coaches.
  • Facilitate communication between YMCA staff-to-coaches and coaches-to-parents, ensuring all information is given out in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Work with outside organizations, such as churches, parks and recreation, and other YMCAs to plan sports seasons, if necessary.
  • Recruit, train, assign, and evaluate sports staff, coaches, officials, and part-time staff.
  • Ensure all coaches and staff complete forms, including background checks, and are trained yearly, in Child Abuse Prevention.
  • Monitor program areas and ensure that all sites are set up, broken down, cleaned, and equipment is put away.
  • Plan and complete evaluations to each team and prepare evaluation reports after each season.
  • Monitor, track, and purchase all equipment, jerseys, trophies, etc., as needed.
  • Ensure development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of all Summer Specialty Camp programs and other related activities.
  • Develop, implement, and track all Summer Specialty/Sport Camp programs, including budgets, staffing, quality control, promotion and marketing for sound fiscal management of the entire department, and all program/activities and events therein.  
  • Develop, present, and maintain a quality image throughout all related departments & facilities.
  • Supervise all children within department, including the appropriate discipline within established Child Abuse Prevention guidelines.
  • Administer successful modification and expansion of new and existing programs in keeping with quality standards, annual goals, and key indicators.
  • Implement quality control of all sports programs and activities through the use of all quality management tools. 
  • Follow all policies and procedures of the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA.
  • Work with Youth Development Director and other Program Directors to evaluate, initiate, and implement
  • programs regarding present and future needs of youth participants.
  • Participate in all required Annual Support Campaign fundraiser/events, as requested.
  • Actively participate within the MOD rotation, as assigned by Branch Executive Director
  • Carry out special projects as assigned and other duties requested by supervisor or executive management.

  • Sound administration of all programs and activities.
  • Steady growth in professional skills and activities.
  • Viewed by members and participants as being helpful and supportive.

Effectiveness will also be measured by the extent of which the incumbent is a supportive staff member achieving the overall goals of the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA association.
