Camp Birkett is licensed by the state of Michigan and accredited by the American Camping Association. Facilities include a lake-view lodge, athletic field, gaga-pit, locker and changing rooms, archery range, waterfront swimming area, watercraft, and fishing areas.
Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Director of Camping will provide leadership, management, and supervision of high-quality camp programming including, but not limited to, Camp Birkett, Out of School Time camps and teen leadership programs. The Director will work under the direction of the Senior Director of Youth Development (SDYD) and in accordance with Ann Arbor YMCA core values, Youth Development Practices, Diversity, Inclusion, and Global Initiatives, Character Development Framework, and Healthy Eating & Physical Activity Standards to develop and deliver innovative programming to youth and teens throughout the Y’s service area.

Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in education, human services, recreation or related field or equivalent professional experience in a related field is required.
  2. Minimum age 21 (Michigan licensing requirement), 25 or older preferred (American Camping Association non-mandatory standard.
  3. Supervisory experience in a child related setting and program development experience strongly preferred.
  4. Must have use of reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license. Must successfully pass requirements to be placed on YMCA’s motor vehicle insurance. Ability to obtain a chauffeur’s driver’s license is required.
  5. Understanding of American Camp Association, State of Michigan Licensing for children’s camps and State Environmental requirements is preferred. ACA Visitor preferred.
  6. Understanding of program development, staff and volunteer training and development, budget development & fiscal management, and life spans of programs are a necessity.
  7. Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, organizational abilities, supervisory skills, and initiative in program development.
  8. Multilingual ability is preferred.
  9. Must be capable of using MS Office software, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
  10. Must be able to learn and use YMCA specific software within 30 days of employment. Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications must be attained within 90 days.

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Must be able to assist with restraint or physical support of youth weighing 180+ pounds as needed for safety during activities that may require stooping, kneeling or crouching. 
  • May provide children with assistance with issues such as personal care.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to navigate uneven terrain. 
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. 
  • Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours - at least 3 hours - at a time.
  • Position requires bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
  • The worker may be subject to environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
Essential Functions

Program Development: 

  1. Provides direct leadership to Camp Birkett, Out of School Time camps, while providing in-direct support to all programs within the Youth Development department.
  2. Designs, implements, and evaluates assigned program curriculum that supports social-emotional, cognitive, and physical processes for all respective program participants and in collaboration with community stakeholders.
  3. Works with the SDYD in program advancement through grant writing processes and alternative funding opportunities.

Healthy Living: 

  1. Responsible for the overall safety and wellbeing of respective youth program participants, staff, and volunteers while at all times enforcing all Ann Arbor YMCA policies rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures, and those for the prevention of child abuse. Possesses working knowledge of child abuse and neglect laws and proper reporting procedures.
  2. Works collaboratively with internal departments to achieve program, department, and organizational goals. Effectively communicates pertinent information to membership, communication and marketing teams, including website updates and printed program materials.
  3. Fosters positive relationships with program participants, families, Ann Arbor Y Staff/Volunteers, partners, and community stakeholders to achieve desired results that align with organizational priorities and program goals.
  4. Demonstrates sound judgement when dealing with daily issues in a variety of situations with program participants, parents, staff, volunteers, and community members of all levels.  
  5. Assists in the development of Standard Operating Procedures as it relates to camp and outdoor education program operations.
  6. Serves as an active member of the Character Development Learning Institute (CDLI) Implementation Team.
  7. Assist with Ann Arbor Y special events and initiatives, such as Annual Campaign, Giving Tuesday, Welcome Week, Healthy Kids Day, and others as requested.
  8. As an Ambassador for the Y, communicates to members, volunteers, and the general public that the Y is the nation’s leading non-profit committed to strengthening the community through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
  9. Models and facilitates YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with youth, colleagues, volunteers, and community members.
  10. Actively participates in required staff meetings, community events, trainings, workshops, conferences, etc. that enhance personal and professional growth and align with organizational and program goals.

Decision Making: 

  1. Works with the SDYD in the development and management of the annual department budget.
  2. Responsible for executing related program budgets for respective camp programs and assists in reporting monthly program variances to ensure financially responsible decision making.

Volunteer/Staff Development: 

  1. Provides direct daily supervision to respective program staff, tracks and approves staff hours, manages and communicates staff schedule, and conducts frequent check-ins with program staff to ensure quality performance and programming. Effectively communicates staff expectations and delegates tasks accordingly.
  2. Prepares, administers, and monitors program participant recruitment, registration, and collection of necessary participant data to support program goals and objectives of respective teen programs.
  3. Works with the SDYD in the delivery of the on-boarding, training, and professional development opportunities for program staff & volunteers; provides continuous coaching to achieve high performance and address undesirable performance, as necessary.

Certifications: 

  1. Team Leader certification is preferred or commitment to attain within 2 years is required. 
  2. Certifications in CPR & First Aid are required and must be maintained. Must be able to acquire trainer-level certifications in CATCH / HEPA within 6 months of hire date.
  3. Must successfully pass background check and complete YMCA Child Abuse Safety training prior to employment.
