Job Description

Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established goals of the Westfield Area YMCA, the Staff Accountant is responsible for performing clerical and administrative duties, paying the Y’s non-payroll-related bills, reconciling bank accounts, processing the bi-weekly payroll and providing support to the CFO and all other constituents in a professional manner. The Staff Accountant must exemplify that member service is an equal part of any position in the Y as the technical aspects of each position and must demonstrate a commitment to the Y’s four Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Qualifications
  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business with a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in an accounting/finance setting.
  • Proficient computer skills, and be proficient with Excel.
  • Must be able to read, write and type.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, accurate and able to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must.
  • Accounts Payable and Payroll experience required; non-profit experience is a plus.
Essential Functions
  • Manage the accounts payable function in accordance with the accounts payable policies and procedures.
  • Process bi-weekly payroll.
  • Reconcile various bank and other balance sheet accounts in a timely, accurate manner each month. 
  • Assist CFO with the monthly accounting close, including journal entries.
  • Resolve credit card chargebacks and other banking issues, as needed.
  • Participate in the annual budget and audit process.
  • Other special projects, as needed.
  • Interact and maintain positive relationships with administrators, supervisors, staff and vendors to perform the above tasks successfully.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all work-related matters.

Risk/Facility Management:  All Staff are responsible for assuring the safety of Y members/participants and for the care, maintenance and safety of all Y facility/program environments. In addition, all staff are required to report accidents/incidents/emergencies, in accordance with Westfield Area Y standard operating policy within 24-hours to the Executive Director, Risk Manager and/or designee. Staff must also adhere to YMCA confidentiality requirements related to all reported incidents.

Quality Assurance:  All staff are expected to plan, deliver, and maintain quality programs, facilities and program environments. Staff will be expected to follow YMCA best practices for their program/membership discipline and to meet or exceed Westfield Area Y’s expectations.

Trainings/Staff Meetings:  Attend and participate in all mandatory trainings (Blood Borne Pathogen Training, Child Abuse Prevention Training, New Staff Orientation, etc.) within specified timeframes and attend all lifesaving courses (as specified by job description). Attend and participate in all staff meetings.

Other Functions:  Fulfill any additional responsibilities as delegated by supervisor.

End Result:  The effectiveness of the Staff Accountant’s job performance is measured by the sound administration of the affairs of the Finance Department evident in purposeful and coordinated programs, outstanding safety record, good public relations, good records and high staff morale.
