POSITION SUMMARY:
The swim instructor or swim coach is responsible for conducting high quality swim instruction to YMCA program participants while following the YMCA of the USA Guidelines. The swim instructor/ coach will ensure the safety of all participants in and around the aquatics area. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall YMCA experience.
POSITION FACTS: Part-Time; Non-Exempt position
An effective YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor or Coach will provide a safe, positive, fun experience that introduces new skills and fosters personal growth for all participants. The Swim Lesson Instructor or Coach will impact the communities understanding of the Y and its mission. The Y will be known as a leader in the community as a mission driven, value driven, and ethical organization.

Requirements
Must be at least 15 years of age.
Prior swim lesson experience preferred.
Proficiency in swimming and safety skills is required.
Must possess a cooperative spirit committed to character development by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to staff, lay leaders, YMCA members, program participants and the general public.
Ability to relate with pool patrons in a positive manner.
Must be professional, alert, courteous, and tactful.
Must be mentally alert to dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all staff and swimmers.
Multi-lingual ability is preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.
Ability to demonstrate swimming skills and ability to project voice and be heard in pool area.
Physically able to see, hear, and communicate clearly.
Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
Must be able to assist participants weighing up to 180 pounds.
Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
GENERAL FUNCTIONS:
Exemplify a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Attend scheduled staff meetings and staff in-services.
Reads all YMCA communications.
Any other duties as needed.
Leader
Current CPR and 1st aid training required or ability to obtain in the first 60 days of employment.
SWIM LESSONS-
YMCA of the USA Swim lesson instructor certification required OR ability to obtain with in the first 90 days of employment
COACH-
USA Swimming coaches’ safety training required OR ability to obtain within the first 90 days of employment
