Job Description

The YMCA of Greenville is a dynamic and rapidly growing association that seeks to strengthen the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

 The Aquatics Specialist supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Aquatic Specialist will ensure safety and high quality experiences in YMCA pools and aquatics areas to all members, guests, and program participants. The Aquatic Specialist will assist with member and participant needs, provide excellent customer service, and maintain a safe aquatics environment. This position will hire, train, and manage all aquatic staff including lifeguards and swim instructors and will assist and coordinate with the Wellness Director for successful delivery of all water based group exercise offerings.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Minimum of two years of experience in Aquatics
  • Able to communicate and enforce policies and procedures to members, program participants, and guests.
  • Able to react quickly and properly in emergency situations.
  • Must have enthusiasm and possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must complete New Staff Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, and Blood Borne Pathogen training within first 30-days of employment.
  • Must hold the following certifications:
    • American Red Cross Lifeguard
    • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (within 90 days)
  • Creating the Member Experience YMCA Training (within 90 days)
Essential Functions
  • Instruct, Lifeguard, or coach 75% of scheduled hours per week.
  • Assist in planning, administrative tasks, and branch support 25% of scheduled hours.
  • Communicates and enforces aquatics rules and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Properly opens, performs daily tasks, and closes aquatics area each day according to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Handles and resolves aquatics concerns and informs director of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
  • Provides accurate, appropriate, and immediate responses to all requests by members/guests.
  • Works without constant direct supervision and remains at assigned lifeguard post for extended periods of time, as required.
  • Maintains positive relationships at all time, with members, participants, and staff.
  • Hire, train, and manage Lifeguard/Instructor level 1 & 2 staff regarding performance.
  • Prepared to teach the assigned classes/programs. Greets and welcomes participants to class each day. All equipment and instructional methods are appropriate for the class.
  • Provide timely and accurate feedback to participants (or parents) about their progress and skills they need to work on.
  • Leave instructional area in a clean and orderly condition by ensuring all equipment is returned to its appropriate area.
  • Maintain required instructional certifications. 
  • Lead staff & YMCA member/program participant communication, including but not limited to, policies, procedures, schedules, and progress reports.
  • Manage staff coverage of unassigned shifts, communicate all policies and procedures to aquatic staff, and develop and lead session-based Swim Instructor/Lifeguard in-services.
  • Meets and plans annual Association lifeguard in-service with Association Lifeguard Instructors.
  • Maintain high-level of member service by answering questions and problem-solving member or staff concerns and issues.

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities
    • Maintenance Employees-ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.
  • Follow employees and volunteers screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk
  • Provide employees and volunteers with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk
  • Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with consumers.
  • Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk
  • Respond quickly to policy and procedure violation using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures
  • Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements
  • Communicate to all employees and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect their consumer from abuse
  • Report essential abuse risk management information to the board of directors
